Whitby for Lunch

One of the biggest joys of relocating back to our native North East of England has been returning to some of the most stunning and outstanding scenery and places to visit in the whole of the British Isles.

MadDad and I both grow up in the North East and MadDad spend the first 5 years of his working life in Whitby and this has become a firm favourite of the minimads.

As soon as they both saw the sun was shining today, they requested lunch at Whitby and who were we to disagree.  So in the car we popped and 20 mins later we were there.  MadDad knows all the best places to find a park and we were soon in the thick of it.

If you are going to eat fish and chips in Whitby then there is only one place in our opinion worth going to and that is The Magpie Cafe.  You can eat in, but we prefer a takeaway on the harbour wall and it is our tradition.

So we all queued to get our cod and chips twice, with home made tartar (me and Maxi), mushy peas (MadDad and Mini) and Lemon (Maxi).  We love the ritual of putting on the salt and vinegar and the smell, oh the smell is out of this world and takes your breath away for a short second.

This was mine and Maxi's cod and chips today and I got a sniff of the batter and fish and I was allowed 2 dips in the tartar not that I mind.  it is great watching the children munch on all the fish and they do.

20 mins later this is what the box looked like:

The other box was just the same and the boys still had room for sweets and ice-cream!!  We made a visit to the old fashioned sweetshop on Sandgate and the boys chose popping candy and then before coming home we made a quick detour to Sneaton and picked up 2 small containers of ice-cream from Beacon Farm, which went down a treat after dinner Sunday Evening.

In fact it was a perfect late winter, early spring day and I hope the start of many family outings to come.

That sounds a perfect day out :) Fish & chips are best eaten from the paper/box whilst watching the water :)
Oh.... it's breakfast time and yet my mouth is watering at the very sight of that fish... fresh from the sea.

Having gone to a seaside without such facilities yesterday, we came home to a bowl of home-made spicy parsnip soup which warmed the cockles nicely. But. But.

Nothing beats fish n' chips.

Did you know it was invented by the French?
Whitby looks lovely. This is great we get to know where all the best places are from Blogging !
Glad you had a lovely time xx
I love Whitby. I took a colleague from Egypt over there a few years back while we were working in Middlesborough. We walked up the harbour wall and then went and sat in and had fish, chips and mushy peas with bread and butter and a pot of tea. I felt it was my duty to introduce him to truly British culture. We all truly enjoyed our time.
I love Whitby too - I've been several times, and have eaten at the famous Magpie Cafe.
I have an award for you over at mine - don't get excited, as I think you've already got it, but I don't think that's important!
Nothing beats a good English seaside meal on the harbour wall. Can't wait for some good chips when we get back! And Whitby is just lovely too.
I love Whitby too! We went up the Northumberland coast yesterday, and I've got my post ready to publish shortly too - it's amazing how the sunshine makes us all feel like going to the seaside!! x
Sounds like Bliss. Sadly our local seaside (20 mins away) is Rhyl. Not quite the same as Whitby. We spent a week camping half way between Whitby and Scarbro' last summer and Isabelle keeps asking to go back because she loved it so much. In fact, we had tears 2 nights ago because she "misses Whitby so much" bless her.

And I can absolutly vouch that there is nothing smells and tastes as good as Whitby fish and chips on the harbour! Heaven. I'm so jealous
Those fish and chips! :) I have always fancied going to Whitby and now I want to even more! suzie. xxx
That looks delicious! My mouth is really watering now!
We love Whitby too!

Can't beat fish and chips in the fresh sea air!

:D
I love eating fish and chips outdoors as well, they just don't taste as good when you're inside. Impressed by how much got eaten - amazed you left the lemon pieces behind!
That's a lovely photo of Whitby. And that fish supper looks completely yummy!

CJ xx
beautiful. I miss good fish and Chips. My mum and dad grew up in the North East (Hartlepool and Middlesborough) so we used to go to up there a lot.
Hi, I stopped by for a Pause for Lent and enjoyed reading this as well. They look so yummy. As a member of the Baby Boomer Generation, my metabolism doesn't allow me to enjoy fish and chips any more. But ohhh, when I was younger, they were a HUGE favorite for my husband and myself! Thank you for some delicious memories. :)
Mmmm I love fish n chips from there.....
