One of the things that my boys adore is play dough, especially the youngest MiniMad, but it all tends to end up in one miss mass of colours, so I make a batch of home made every three months of sooner, depending how long it is before they want more than one colour.
Since they no longer try to eat it I have started to add essential oils to the mixture, which takes the whole experience of play dough to a different level.
It is so easy and inexpensive to make
1 and half cups (1 cup is 250ml) of salt
3 cups of warm water
3 cups of plain flour
3 tablespoons of oil
6 teaspoons of cream of tartar
Food colouring
Essential oils
- add the salt and water to a large pan and wait for the salt to melt
- add the flour, oil and cream of tartar and heat over a medium heat, stirring continuously until it starts to pull away from the sides
- Tip out the dough and need for about 2 mins
- Split the dough in to smaller amounts and add food colouring and essential oil
This keeps in an airtight container for about three months

this is great. i will try it myself. Iris has mashed up all the play-dough into a muddy yucky splodge. what essential oils do you favour? i'm guessing lavender?!
Hi Nath, thanks for stopping by. We use different oils for different colours -Lavender, Neroli, geranium, camomile. MiniMad is a masher too!
Great posst thankyou
